If you’re a budding filmmaker or a content creator, you’ve probably used Adobe Premiere Pro. While many are familiar with the basics, there are a few hidden gems that go unnoticed. We’ll dive into some underrated features that will take your editing skills to the next level.

1) Adjustment Layers

Ever wished you could apply the same effects or adjustments to multiple clips in one go? These layers allow you to add effects, color grading, or any other adjustments above your clips. By applying an effect to the layer, you can instantly apply it to all the clips below it. This saves you time and ensures consistency throughout your project.

For example, let’s say you want to add a vintage film look to several clips. Instead of individually applying the effect to each clip, create an adjustment layer, add the vintage film effect to it, and voila! Your entire sequence will now have that retro charm. This works with LUTs and any other effect too.

2) Keyboard Shortcuts

Premiere Pro has a plethora of keyboard shortcuts that can significantly speed up your editing workflow. There’s a shortcut for almost everything, from basic tasks like cutting and pasting to more advanced features like nesting sequences. Learning and using these shortcuts can save you countless clicks and help you work more efficiently.

Here’s a quick example: Press “Ctrl + K” (or “Command + K” on Mac) to instantly split a video clip or audio. It may seem small, but when you’re in the zone, those few seconds add up. So take some time to learn shortcuts or customize them to fit your editing style.

3) The Essential Sound Panel

We all know how crucial audio is in video production. Adobe Premiere Pro’s Essential Sound panel is a game-changer in audio editing. This underrated feature offers options for improving your audio quality, even if you’re not an audio expert.

Let’s say you have an interview clip with background noise. Select the clip, open the Essential Sound panel, and choose the “Dialogue” option. Premiere Pro will intelligently analyze the audio and suggest appropriate adjustments like noise reduction, clarity enhancement, etc.

4) Time Remapping

Sometimes, you may want to add creative flair to your videos by manipulating time. Adobe Premiere Pro’s Time Remapping feature allows you to speed up, slow down, or even reverse specific parts of your footage. This can add a cinematic touch to your storytelling and make your videos more engaging.

For instance, let’s say you have a shot of a skateboarder performing a cool trick. Using Time Remapping, you can slow down the footage just as the skateboarder reaches the peak of their jump, highlighting the moment in all its glory. It’s a simple yet effective technique to emphasize the most exciting parts of your action. I recently used this tool to reverse some pan-in shots to use as B-Roll footage.

5) Shared Projects

If you’re working in a team or collaborating with others on a project, Adobe Premiere Pro’s Shared Projects feature is one thing you’re bound to benefit from. It allows multiple users to work on the same project simultaneously, eliminating the need for tedious back-and-forth exchanges of project files.

With Shared Projects, you can have different team members working on different sequences, and all the changes are automatically synced. This streamlines the editing process, enhances teamwork, and saves you from the headache of managing multiple project versions.

6) The Finder App

The one drawback with Premiere is it doesn’t have a great way to organize your video assets. As fellow content creators, we understand the struggle of managing endless clips. That’s why we created Shade – the finder app for creatives that will 10x your efficiency.

In a world where you can effortlessly dump all your videos, photos, projects, and more into one place, Shade’s powerful AI will organize your assets automatically without needing file names or making tags.

But the real magic lies in Shade’s spotlight tool. It actually recognizes objects within your photos and videos, so you can stop scrolling and dropping files into that space-hogging source window. Can’t remember the name of a file? No problem, just search for the elements you remember. Shade will find it based on the objects it contains, all without leaving your editor. Say goodbye to endless scrolling and searching today- download Shade.
